Hi everyone, I know there are a lot of questions related to assessment in physical education. In fact, I chose to leave a teaching position that I loved - to attain my PhD in physical education pedagogy - because I wanted to truly understand a lot more about teaching, and in particular a lot more about assessment. You see, I wanted to better understand assessment, and I wanted my students to enjoy assessment and view it as a way to learn better and increase their motivation. Additionally - I wanted the entire process to be fun for my students. So, while teaching is constantly evolving as research informs our practice, I am excited to share some of my thoughts related to assessment in physical education in an upcoming professional development webinar series for teachers.
I am honored to kick off a FREE (holla!) webinar sponsored by Thompson Educational Publishing (TEP). I have known the Thompson family for a decade now and the founder of this company, like me, was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada. TEP has developed many evidence-based resources for quality physical education over the years, and so when they invited me to lead a webinar, I was happy to jump on board. Thompson Publishing model a philosophy I adhere to - lift one another up. One of Thompson’s lead resource developers is also one of my favorite people in the profession - Ted Temertzoglou (@Lifeisathletic). You will learn why I admire him in about 5 seconds after meeting him.
If you would like to register for this upcoming FREE webinar titled, “Using Assessment in Physical Education to Optimize Learning and Fun” you can do so here. Please note: This webinar is open to the first 100 who register and there are only a few spots left. This webinar will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd at 8 p.m. CENTRAL time.
I also wanted to let you know that of my amazing colleagues Dr. Jamie Mandigo and Dr. Louis Humbert will be leading upcoming FREE webinars brought to you by Thompson.
Specifically:
October 21st
Dr. James Mandigo will present on physical literacy and its role in schools.
November 18th
Dr. Louise Humbert will present on what H&PE teachers can do to in increase student engagement and decrease dropout rates.
Dr. Mandigo is one of the authors (along with additional Canadian colleagues Dr. Nancy Francis, Dr. Ken Lodewyk, and Dr. Ron Lopez) of the definition of physical literacy which was adopted by Physical and Health Education (PHE) Canada and by Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America in which the new NASPE standards are based. This definition was inspired by the work of Dr. Margaret Whitehead and I met Dr. Whitehead first at a conference in which Dr. Mandigo was instrumental in having her attend. Dr. Mandigo is brilliant in both what he knows and his ability to explain what he knows in a way in which everyone can understand. We sat on the PHE Canada board of directors together when I was a professor in Canada and I admire him greatly, and recently co-authored a book chapter with him and Dr. Jennifer Bhalla (stay tuned!).
Dr. Humbert is the former president of PHE Canada and one of the most dynamic speakers I have ever had the privilege of hearing present. Dr. Humbert and I also sat the board of PHE Canada together and I learned so much from her when I began my career as a physical education teacher educator. Dr. Humbert, like Dr. Mandigo, is extremely knowledgeable and models the life in which she is dedicated in helping students to live - a physically literate life. I also enjoy teasing Dr. Humbert about the Tar Heels when the Cavaliers beat them - we we both attended ACC graduate schools!
I know I’ll definitely be following @ThompsonHuddle on twitter for more information on Dr. Mandigo’s and Dr. Humbert’s upcoming webinar (when and how to register, etc.). I hope you will, too! It’s really a great way to receive quality professional development while sipping tea in your PJs - for no charge. I am confident you will get to know and enjoy the folks at Thompson Educational Publishing (TEP) and the presenters (more names and dates to be announced going forward) through this free professional development series.
In closing, what questions would you like me to answer on assessment in PE? Please put your questions on the Huddle (Thompson’s social media platform) OR in the comment space below!
Have a healthy and active week!
